Chiang Mai 3-day itinerary: temples, elephants & mountains

Three days is enough to see the best of Chiang Mai without rushing: one easy day close to the city, one big day in the hills, and one day you choose. This is how we'd plan it at our Old City desk, using tours with hotel pickup so you don't have to sort out transport. Pickup times are approximate and we confirm them after booking.

The plan at a glance

Pick one option for each day. Option A suits early risers; option B keeps the mornings slower.

DayOption AOption B
Day 1Sunrise & monk alms at Doi Suthep, the Old City on foot, then a night street food walkThe Old City on foot, then Doi Pui sunset & Doi Suthep by night
Day 2Elephant sanctuary (half day or full day)Doi Inthanon National Park (full day)
Day 3Chiang Rai's White and Blue Temples (a long day)Ziplines, jungle luge or white-water rafting (about 5 hours)

Day 1: Doi Suthep, the Old City and street food

Keep the first day close to town. Early riser? Sunrise & Monk Alms at Doi Suthep picks you up at 05:00–05:15 and has you back by about 09:00–09:30, with the rest of the day free to walk the Old City temples.

In the evening, join the Chiang Mai Night Street Food Walk (pickup 18:00–18:30, about 3 hours) or a Khantok Dinner & Cultural Show. Prefer to see the temple lit up? Doi Pui Sunset & Doi Suthep by Night picks up at 16:30–17:00 and Doi Suthep by Night at 17:00–17:30.

Day 2: elephants or Doi Inthanon

This is your big day in the hills. For elephants, the Half-Day Elephant Sanctuary has a morning session (pickup 08:00–08:30) and an afternoon session (pickup 12:00–12:30): feeding, a mud spa and a river bath, with no riding. Full-day versions add rafting, a jungle trek or the Sticky Waterfall. See all ethical elephant sanctuary tours in Chiang Mai.

For mountains, the classic Doi Inthanon National Park tour (pickup 07:30–08:00, back around 17:00–17:30) visits Thailand's highest point, the King & Queen pagodas, a Hmong market, Mae Klang Luang coffee village and Wachirathan Waterfall. Compare all Doi Inthanon tours from Chiang Mai.

Can't choose? The Doi Inthanon Trek & Elephant Sanctuary tour does both in one long day (back around 19:30).

Day 3: Chiang Rai or an adventure day

If the temples are a must, go to Chiang Rai. Pickup is 07:00–07:30 and you're back around 18:30–19:00 on the 3 Temples tour, or around 21:00–21:30 if you add the Golden Triangle. It's a long day in the vehicle, so read our honest guide to the Chiang Rai day trip first.

For a shorter, more active day, choose Jungle Flight Zipline or the Skyline Jungle Luge & Zipline (both about 5 hours with several pickup times), or white-water rafting on the Mae Taeng. More ideas: Chiang Mai zipline and rafting tours.

Adjusting the plan

  • Travelling with kids: shorter days are easier. A half-day elephant visit and the Chiang Mai Night Safari (pickup 17:00–17:30) work better than a 12-hour Chiang Rai day.
  • Only two days: do Day 1, then choose elephants or Doi Inthanon for Day 2.
  • First time in Thailand: keep Day 1 easy and read our Thailand travel guide for transport, money and food costs.
  • Visiting between November and February: bring a warm layer for Doi Inthanon and early-morning trips.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do an elephant sanctuary and Doi Inthanon on the same day?

Yes. The Doi Inthanon Trek & Elephant Sanctuary tour combines both, with pickup at 07:00–07:30 and a return around 19:30. It's a long day.

Which trips need an early start?

Sunrise at Doi Suthep (pickup 05:00–05:15), Chiang Rai (07:00–07:30) and Doi Inthanon (07:00–08:00). Plan an easier evening the night before.

Is Chiang Rai worth it on a 3-day trip?

Only if the temples are a priority. It's a 12–14 hour day. If you'd rather not spend that long in a vehicle, choose an adventure day or a second day in the mountains.
