Chiang Rai day trips from Chiang Mai

Chiang Rai is the most popular day trip from Chiang Mai, and for good reason: it's home to some of the most striking modern temples in Thailand. The dazzling White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), the sapphire-and-gold Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) and the dark, dramatic Black House (Baan Dam) are all on the same route.

Chiang Rai day trips from Chiang Mai

It's a long day, so it pays to go with a driver and guide. Pickup from your Chiang Mai hotel is around 7:00 in the morning, with a stop at a natural hot spring on the way north. Depending on the tour you're back between about 6:30 and 9:30 in the evening.

Choose the art-temple route for the White Temple, Blue Temple and Black House; add Wat Huay Pla Kang's giant Guan Yin and the tea fields of Singha Park; or go all the way to the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet on the Mekong.
