Best time to visit Chiang Mai: cool, hot and green seasons

Chiang Mai is worth visiting all year, but the season changes what's best to book. Here's a simple guide from our desk. Weather varies from year to year, so treat the months below as a rough guide rather than a promise.

Cool season: November to February

Dry days, cooler nights and the clearest views, which is why it's the busiest time of year. It's the best season for Doi Inthanon tours from Chiang Mai, but it gets cold at the top: the summit averages around 6°C in January and can drop below freezing on the coldest mornings.

The Kew Mae Pan ridge trail near the summit is open from 1 November to 31 May, and the Pa Pong Piang rice terraces tour runs until 30 November, when the rice turns gold.

Hot season and haze: March to May

These are the hottest months before the rains. Smoke from agricultural burning and forest fires often causes haze in northern Thailand, usually worst somewhere between February and April; it varies a lot from year to year, so check the air quality (AQI) before you travel and on the day.

Mountain views can be hazy at this time, so it's a good season for water and evening trips: white-water rafting on the Mae Taeng, the Sticky Waterfall, or one of our Chiang Mai night tours.

Rainy (green) season: June to October

Showers often come in the afternoon or evening, and the wettest months are usually August and September. In return you get green hills, full waterfalls and quieter roads.

The Pa Pong Piang rice terraces tour starts on 15 August, when the rice is green. The Kew Mae Pan trail is closed from June to October, so choose the Pha Dok Siew nature trail or the classic summit tour instead. Rafting depends on river levels: if a tour is cancelled because of weather or the river, we offer another date, another tour or a full refund (see our booking & cancellation policy).

Frequently asked questions

Is the burning season a bad time to visit?

Not always, but haze can be bad on some days, usually between February and April. Check the air quality before you go, keep outdoor plans flexible, and choose water or evening activities on hazy days.

When is the Kew Mae Pan trail open?

From 1 November to 31 May. Outside those dates, choose the Pha Dok Siew trail or the classic Doi Inthanon tour.

Can I go rafting in the rainy season?

Usually yes, and the river is often livelier. Operators can change or cancel trips for safety when the water is too high; if that happens we offer another date, another tour or a full refund.
